WASHINGTON, Washington County — A reported mud flap violation led to the recovery of 17 packages of suspected methamphetamine and heroin during a traffic stop in Washington County, the Washington Police Department said.
On Sunday morning, a patrol officer was heading north on I-15 toward Washington when a pickup truck with a lift kit and aftermarket wheels and tires passed the officer, who then noticed the truck was not equipped with mud flaps or fender flares, according to a police affidavit filed in support of the arrest.
After pulling in behind the pickup, the officer conducted a traffic stop.
The driver, 40-year-old Daniel Mendoza-Reyes, of Riverside County, California, reportedly appeared "extremely" nervous, with shaky hands, a lack of eye contact and difficulty formulating sentences, police said. Due to Reyes' appearance of a nervous state, the officer called for backup.
