PROVO — The humble Creamery on Ninth is the latest building on the Brigham Young University campus to be consigned to the ash heap of history.

The squat brick structure, which is an iconic Provo date spot as well as a dependable campus grocer, will be demolished and rebuilt directly west of the current location — don't worry, it'll still be the Creamery on Ninth (900 East).

"The old building is iconic … we've served millions of guests there, so it holds lots of memories," said Savanna Bagley, assistant marketing manager for BYU Dining Services.

The building is certainly old — 75 years old, to be exact — and it hasn't kept pace with the growing campus community. Plans to rebuild have been in the works for about a year.

The new and improved building will feature a 70% increase in retail space, said BYU representative Aaron Sorenson, meaning lots more room for diners, grocery shoppers and staff.

Moving the creamery's location west also opens up more room for parking once the old building is demolished. The old building will remain standing until the new building is open for business.

But will the new creamery keep the charm and history of the old? Bagley thinks so, though the new building will have some modern upgrades. The exterior will still be a classic red brick, and the menu favorites aren't going anywhere.

"We will for sure keep classics, but we have some exciting new things in development," Bagley said. "I'm super excited about the expanded capabilities of the new building."

The new building will open to the public in mid-2025.
