OGDEN — Weber State suffered a 27-10 loss to Northern Arizona in a night clash at Stewart Stadium Saturday.
The dynamic freshman duo of Adam Damante and Angel Flores played a pivotal role in securing the second victory of the season for the Lumberjacks. In a combined effort, Flores and Damante contributed to three crucial touchdowns that powered their team to success.
Penalties pushed the Wildcats back throughout the game, and the Lumberjacks capitalized on the mistakes as the night went on.
The lone bright spot for the Wildcats in the first quarter was when Kylan Weisser managed to reach the end zone with a 1-yard rushing touchdown.
The Lumberjacks found an offensive rhythm early in the second quarter when redshirt freshman Angel Flores bulldozed his way through the defense for a 6-yard touchdown run, which brought the Lumberjacks within 1 point with 14 minutes remaining in the first half.
The Wildcats' next possession was met with a relentless defense from the Lumberjacks, which forced Weber State to punt. Northern Arizona wasted no time in capitalizing on the opportunity after Coleman Owen fielded the punt on the 15-yard line and eluded defenders to complete an 85-yard punt return touchdown, giving the Lumberjacks a 13-7 lead.
In a successful strategy, the Lumberjacks alternated between two quarterbacks to close out the game. Freshman quarterback Adam Damante extended Northern Arizona's lead in the second quarter with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Phillips Jr.
The game's fate was ultimately sealed by Tommy Ellis, a junior from Phoenix, Arizona, who made a crucial interception with just 1:26 remaining on the game clock.
Damante had an impressive night throwing for 183 passing yards. Among the receivers, Owen was the standout player with 10 receptions for 60 yards.
On the defensive side of things, Winston Reed led the Wildcats with 16 tackles during the game.
With the victory, Northern Arizona improved its conference record to 2-1 and will return home to face Portland State on Oct. 14. Meanwhile, the Wildcats, now at 1-2 in conference play, will aim to bounce back next week as they take on UC Davis at Stewart Stadium in Ogden.
