SALT LAKE CITY — The weather is warming up for this week and lifting all of our spirits with hopes of spring.

But if the warmer weather isn’t doing a good job at making you feel better, then reading this article will.

The KSL.com “Make Your Week” column features uplifting stories sent in from people outside the newsroom. To send in the stories that have made your day better, email them in 100 words or less to fjolley@ksl.com. Photos and videos are encouraged.

Local students showing support

Bart P.

“A local high school did a random act of kindness week last week. One of the activities we did was make two posters that our students signed. A woman then delivered them to Parkland, Florida. I got an email from a parent with these pictures of where they were displayed, right in front of the 17 angels that were illuminated to remember the 17 people that were killed. Our hearts go out to all of our friends in Parkland.”

Helping the cats

Susan M.

“I have a friend who … is retired and walks daily. In doing so, she has found feral cats in her neighborhood and has been feeding them. More and more cats have found her as a result. She will catch the cats, take them to Best Friends where they will be fixed, and then return them to the Glendale area. The food alone is costing her a lot of money, which she doesn't have. She finds a way to keep the care going as she loves animals.”

Teaching skills in Africa

Whitney L.

“BYU students are fighting poverty in Ghana with their new business model ‘Brighten Africa.’ Though many Ghanaian citizens are able to attend college, the education provided rarely equips them with the skills and competencies needed for employment. Brighten Africa aims to be the remedy by providing basic tech jobs to African student-employees who work on data entry during the day before receiving two hours of technical training. Over time, the training will progress to higher-level courses, such as HTML, CSS, Wordpress, and Javascript.

“Over the last six months, the BYU student has worked with local Ghanaians and BYU classmates to develop a combined training/teaching business model that allows Brighten Africa to pay student-employees above the Ghanaian minimum wage while also providing higher-level technical training.”

Service in Uganda

Angie D.

“An Ogden man, Dave, has been in Uganda, Africa, for the last 30 days without an organization and on his own dime. He hired a construction crew and has built a beautiful new schoolhouse in a village and built two latrines for the school children and teachers. (He also) drilled three different water wells in three villages without any running water and has brought many bundles of clothes to give away in these villages. He has changed the lives of so many there. He went there with his sister and her husband who have also been involved in so many good things there.”

Friendly stranger in the checkout line

Adrienne E.

“I needed to get something from Desert Book, so I hurried my kids (ages four, four, and one years old) in, grabbed what I needed, and headed to the line. My kids were doing a good job waiting patiently and not trying to grab everything in sight as we waited, but the line was moving a little slower than I'd hoped.

“When it was the turn of the lady in front of me, she told the cashier she was going to let me go first and added that she'd just come from watching her grandchildren (3-year-old twins and a baby) and knew how it felt to be in my shoes. Then she also chatted with my kids while I was completing my purchase. This was such a boost to me, as usually shopping in a store that doesn't have shopping carts to help contain my kids is a struggle! I really appreciate this woman's sweet service!”
