PRICE, Carbon County — State wildlife officers are recommending charges for a Price man who they said poached a 31-inch trophy buck deer a little more than a week before the state’s general deer hunt began.

Wildlife officials were alerted to the poached deer by a Carbon County resident on Oct. 10, 11 days before the general hunt was scheduled to begin, Division of Wildlife Resources officer Justin Brimhall said.

Brimhall said a bystander was watching the deer from a distance when he heard a gunshot and saw the buck run away like it had been shot. That man called wildlife officials who responded to the area just south of Price and located the alleged shooter in the field.

The shooter was interviewed by wildlife officials and the deer carcass was located a short time later, Brimhall said. He added the case is now being forwarded to the Carbon County Attorney’s Office for formal charges. The man’s name was not released.

If convicted, he could face fines up to $8,000 in restitution, probation or jail time, according to the Division of Wildlife Resources. In addition, he may have any hunting licenses suspended or revoked for several years.

Brimhall said wildlife officials were appreciative of the bystander who alerted them to the poaching case.

“The chances of us being there and seeing this was very unlikely,” he said. “We encourage to report all crimes or suspicions to us. We greatly appreciate the help when they’re able to help us crack down on these guys who are shooting illegally.”

Anyone who may have any information regarding any Utah poaching cases is encouraged to contact wildlife officials at 1-800-662-3337 or any of the Division of Wildlife offices.
