OGDEN — Weber State’s football team is a long way from where it was when Jay Hill was named head coach four years ago.
But it’s right where the team wants to be, ranked No. 22 nationally in the preseason FCS coaches’ poll.
“That’s what we want,” Hill said as the Wildcats wrapped up their second week of training camp. “We want people noticing us. That means we’re playing well.
“Now we have to handle it the right way.”
Weber State erased a five-year playoff drought last year, qualifying for its first FCS postseason since 2009 before a first-round loss at Chattanooga.
But it’s not the end of the road, either.
“Obviously we want to do better than that, keep progressing and moving on,” said quarterback Stefan Cantwell, who won a state title at Bingham High. “It’s a good goal to start out with, but obviously we want to do a lot better.”
Weber State opens the season Sept. 2 at home against Montana Western. They’ll also face Cal and Sacramento State before returning home for the Big Sky Conference opener Sept. 23 against UC Davis.
