PANGUITCH — If you are looking for a way to get into the outdoors this upcoming Pioneer Day weekend, you may want to consider heading to southern Utah for a fishing tournament.

Garfield County, the U.S. Forest Service, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and several local businesses are hosting the fishing tournament at Panguitch Lake. It begins Saturday and will run until Sept. 4 (Labor Day.)

Anglers can win prizes during the tournament by either catching one of the 100 tagged rainbow trout in the lake or by catching a fish that is over 24 inches long. Participants will locate the red tags near the dorsal fin of the fish.

“Fishing at Panguitch Lake is really good right now,” DWR southern region fisheries manager Richard Hepworth said in a news release. “We have not yet seen any negative impacts from the Brian Head Fire.”

Hepworth said there is a healthy population of rainbow trout, Bonneville cutthroat trout and tiger trout at Panguitch Lake. However, anglers should note that all cutthroat and tiger trout between 15-22 inches long must be released, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources said.

Along with being able to win prizes, anglers can also enter into a drawing to win a rifle donated by the Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife. The drawing will be held Sept. 4.

If you catch a tagged fish or a fish longer than 24 inches during the tournament, anglers can claim their prize by taking their fish to one of the following local businesses: Aspen Cove Resort, Bear Paw Resort, Burger Barn, Blue Springs Lodge, Panguitch Lake Adventure Resort, Panguitch Lake General Store, and Rocky Point Boat Dock.

Additional details about the tournament can be found on the Panguitch Lake Fish Tournament Facebook page.
