WEST BOUNTIFUL — Abby Schofield may have accidentally found herself a new pitching wedge.

Hopefully her father approves.

The Manila High senior broke her wedge on the final hole of the region tournament in Wendover, but borrowed the loaner and shot 83 that included an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole Wednesday to cruise to her second 1A medalist honor in three years at Lakeside Golf Course.

Oh, and Schofield helped lead the rural Utah school that doesn't have a home course to the program's first state title by 16 strokes over second-place Monticello.

"I'm going to be honest: the team title means the most to me," said Schofield, who plans to play college golf in North Carolina after she graduates. "The support I've had from them has been amazing; I couldn't do anything that I've done, or half of it, if I didn't have them. I really have to thank all of my junior golf friends, helping me through the season, keeping me positive and never letting me down."

Manila does't have a home course, and Schofield practices mostly on a golf simulator for much of the year — which can be particularly challenging in the short game, chipping and putting, she says. But the 1A girls golf medalist in 2022 who shot 83 at Glendale hadn't broken a club until that final round of her last region meet.

"I broke my wedge, and thought I wouldn't win state with a broken wedge. But the wedge that my dad gave me, it came in clutch," said Schofield, who added she broke the club in half while hitting from a barbed-wire fence on the 18th hole. "Everything was just clicking. The putts were falling really well."

"I'm going to have to take it forever," she deadpanned, "because that saved me today."

Manila teammate Kallie Bair finished tied for fifth, and Sadie Davis, Janie Christensen and Reagan Browning all finished inside the top 15 for the Mustangs.
