SALT LAKE CITY — KSL.com is now giving readers the option of translating news and sports stories into Spanish in an instant.

With the click of the "Leer en español" link at the top of each story on KSL.com, readers can convert stories from English to Spanish using translation tools powered by Google. This translation function is available on desktop computers and will soon also be available on KSL.com's iOS and Android apps.

KSL.com is Utah's largest digital news outlet, and the translation feature works toward the goal of being even more inclusive. The Latino reporting team is led by veteran reporter Tim Vandenack, who speaks fluent Spanish and has worked as a reporter in Mexico, Chile, Texas, Kansas, Indiana and now in Utah.

The U.S. Census Bureau estimated 10.4% of Utahns spoke Spanish in 2022, up from 9.4% in 2010. At the same time, Latinos, whether they spoke English, Spanish or both, accounted for 14.6% of the state's population in 2022, up from 12.3% in 2010. That percentage continues to rise, making accessibility to news stories relevant to the Latino community more important than ever.

Ahead of the new translation service, KSL.com in September launched a newsletter — Voces de Utah, Spanish for Utah Voices — that gives readers a roundup of Utah news of interest to the Latino community. It comes out once every two weeks and you can sign up to get it here. Information on all KSL.com newsletters is available here.
