Living in or near the city can give seniors a community, social schedule and calendar full of activities to keep them engaged. Salt Lake City checks all the boxes with its historic and lively downtown.

Here are just a few of the activities seniors can enjoy downtown Salt Lake City.

Farmers market

People from all over the city gather downtown for the weekly summer farmer's market, and winter farmer's market. In the warm months, you'll find the fruit and veggie stands at Pioneer Park. The Rio Grande is home to the Winter Market.

Stroll around and sample homemade salsa, breads, and fresh-from-farm peaches. In addition to nice weather and food, you can find homemade jewelry vendors, dog treats and even some clothing. If you live downtown, the walk to the park is a wonderful way to get moving and see more of the city.

Theater and music

Performing arts are a hallowed tradition in Utah and downtown is home to myriad theaters and venues. One of the most recent additions to the downtown arts scene is the Eccles Theater. According to Arts Salt Lake, the theater hosted 197 performances in its first year.

The numerous Temple Square concerts are just a crosswalk away from City Creek Living. About one block west lies Abravanel Hall, where the Utah Symphony frequently performs. And if you're a fan of pop music, the Vivint Arena is only a couple blocks away from the heart of downtown. Big music legends like Celine Dion, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and local favorite The Piano Guys frequent the massive arena.

Sports

Of course, there are BYU and Utah games in Utah, but the true Salt Lake City all stars play in the Vivint Arena. The Jazz games are a huge draw for many throughout the state. Fans and former players alike form a strong Utah Jazz bond — players like Bryon Russell remember their time on the team fondly and still give back to the community.

If you live downtown, it's only a short walk or (free) train ride away.

Walking tours

Seniors can lace up their shoes and take in the city’s history and architecture via walking tours. GPS My City offers a number of tours via mobile app, perfect for people with a little extra free time on their hands. Take the two-hour Historic Sites Tour, the North Downtown Tour or even the Shopping Tour for a little extra knowledge about your city.

Museums

Salt Lake’s museums explore many facets of local and worldwide history. Seniors and young people alike can stroll through the Leonardo Museum for modern art and immersive experiences. The Natural History Museum of Utah is stunning in its architecture and exhibits.

For those who favor a more art-based museum experience, Salt Lake City has the Utah Museum of Fine Arts as well as the Utah Museum of Contemporary Arts. And right on Temple Square, there's the Family History Library that has many interactive elements in their family-friendly Discovery Center. You can get help researching your own genealogy and learn a little more about your ancestors.

Parks and nature

Utah is home to magnificent national and state parks, and its ski slopes are world-renowned. But those who live downtown don’t have to travel an hour, or four, to bask in the region’s natural beauty.

Red Butte Garden is 100 acres of developed gardens, plant collections and hiking trails in the foothills on the eastern edge of the University of Utah campus. Walk around the trails and learn more about the plant life that thrives in Utah. Snap a few pictures and even enjoy a bite to eat.

You can also enjoy the great outdoors in the city at the Tracy Aviary. It claims to be “the largest and oldest of only two free-standing aviaries in the nation,” says the website. Take a look at some of the rarest and protected species, like bald eagles.
