SPRINGDALE — The body of a hiker missing since Monday was recovered Wednesday afternoon, officials report.

Maurice "Moe" Harris, 47, was found deceased along the Deeptrap Mountain Trail, according to Aly Baltrus with the National Park Service.

A friend had dropped off Harris at the East Rim Trailhead about 4 p.m. Monday, according to a press release from the National Park Service. Harris was reported overdue about 10 p.m. after he failed to meet with the same friend at the Weeping Rock shuttle stop as planned.

A preliminary search on the ground and by helicopter Tuesday resulted in no sign of Harris.

About 40 people and some search dogs were assigned to six units that began a methodical search for him Wednesday morning.

Officials believed Harris had some water and snacks with him when he went missing but no lights, other equipment or extra clothing.

Officials have not yet released a cause of death for Harris.
