ZION NATIONAL PARK — Rockfalls have closed another trail in Zion National Park as powerful thunderstorms have caused damage and closures in the area over the past few weeks.

The Hidden Canyon Trail is closed until further notice due to “active rockfalls,” Zion National Park officials said on Twitter. Park personnel will need to evaluate the trail before reopening it, officials said.

The Hidden Canyon Trail is located in the Big Bend area of Zion National Park, on the east side of Zion Canyon facing the popular Angels Landing trail.

The fall was mostly sand and small rocks, according to an emailed statement from park spokeswoman Aly Baltrus. No one was injured during the fall.

Two other rockfalls took place on the trail area on July 2 and 4, covering about 45 feet of the trail in a foot and a half of sand, Baltrus said.

It’s the latest in a series of trail closures in the park following heavy rainfall and flash flood warnings this month.

Damage from a July 11 storm forced park officials to close the West Rim Trail from the Grotto to Cabin Spring, including Angels Landing, the Kayenta Trail and the Upper Emerald Pools Trail.

Those trails remained closed as of Saturday morning, according to the park’s website. The terminus of Lower Emerald Pools trail is also closed, Baltrus said.

The Weeping Rock, East Rim, Observation Point, Cable Mountain and Deer Trap trails are still open in the park, she added.

Portions of the Kolob Canyons area of the park also are closed for the season due to a construction project.

Proceeding onto the trails that are closed could result in a fine, park officials said.
