SALT LAKE CITY — Coming off its best season of football, Weber State enters the 2018 season picked to finish second in the Big Sky Conference in both the coaches and media poll, which were released Monday as part of the conference’s media day.

The Wildcats were second only to Eastern Washington, which was picked to finish first in both polls, according to a Big Sky Conference news release. The Eagles earned six first-place votes in the coaches poll and 27 in the media poll. Weber State got three first-place votes in the coaches poll and 19 in the media poll, marking a close contest between the two programs.

Northern Arizona rounded out the top three in the coaches poll, followed by Idaho, Sacramento State, Southern Utah, Montana and Montana State. The media also selected Northern Arizona at No. 3, followed by Montana, Idaho, Southern Utah, Sacramento State and Montana State.

Weber State also placed six players on the Big Sky preseason All-Conference team, which is the most of any program in the conference. Those players include special team’s Brady May, offensive lineman Iosua Opeta, return specialist Rashid Shaheed, linebacker LeGrand Toia, placekicker Trey Tuttle and defensive end Jonah Williams.

May was named to the first team All-America and All-Big Sky honors last season on special teams as part of a program that won two FCS Playoff games and finished with a fifth-place national ranking.

The preseason polls and preseason all-conference team were released as part of the Big Sky Conference media day in Spokane, Washington, Monday. Weber State begins its season against in-state opponent Utah at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Aug. 31 at 6 p.m.
