Man pays tribute to veterans

Ray C.

"Ed stands vigil for those who served every Fourth of July and Memorial Day. He was (on the I-215 overpass at 4500 South) on the Fourth this year handing out flags to those who stopped by to say hi or who walked or cycled by."

12-year-old raises money for fellow soccer lover

Daniel W.

"My niece Makenna was diagnosed a few months ago with Ewing sarcoma and quickly began a battle for her life. Bad news came after bad news, and we had to watch our strong and beautiful niece suffer. She has always been an athletic, kind, happy girl who has a passion for soccer and helping anyone she sees who needs something. In our family, we call her the "baby whisperer" because all of her cousins love her and she can soothe a baby better than most of the parents. I shared some of Makenna's story one day with a coworker, and he shared her story with his family. His 12-year-old daughter, Aspen, also a soccer lover, was touched by her story and decided to do something about it. Aspen went door to door in her community with 'Miracle for Makenna' fliers to raise money to help a girl she had literally never met. Aspen had help from her sisters and the support of her parents, and as of today, she has raised just shy of $1,500 to help Makenna and her family with medical expenses.

Our family was so touched by her sweet service and all the time she devoted to helping a total stranger. We invited her and her family to a barbecue to meet Makenna and it was an amazing experience. It brought us comfort and hope in a very difficult time. Aspen is continuing her plans to raise funds and from what her dad has told me, she doesn't plan on stopping any time soon."
