SPANISH FORK — Lincoln Beach and Marina at Utah Lake is officially closed due to algal blooms, public health officials announced Friday.

Test results revealed that water in that area had levels of bacteria more than three times greater than the threshold level for health dangers, Utah Department of Environmental Quality officials said in an emailed statement.

The tests showed that the water near Lincoln Beach had 36 million cells per milliliter of cyanobacteria that can create toxins, officials said. The cyanobacteria is considered a recreational danger at a level of 10 million cells per milliliter, according to the statement.

“Water with these levels of concentration in the algal bloom pose serious health risks,” Eric Edwards, deputy director of Utah County Health Department, said in the statement. “To protect the health of people and animals that use the lake, it is necessary for this portion of the lake to remain closed until it is safe for recreation.”

The level of cyanobacteria at Lincoln Beach was measured at 14 times greater than what was in the area last week, officials said.

Swedes Access at Provo Bay, Utah Lake State Park and Sandy Beach are still under a warning for recreational uses, officials said. People using Utah Lake for recreation are advised to avoid areas of algae or scum, officials said. Most of the lake is not currently affected by the algae, but the blooms can move or disperse depending on weather conditions. So officials advised people to keep an eye on conditions throughout the day.

Water quality test result updates will be posted on the DEQ’s website at habs.utah.gov.
