PARK CITY — On Sept. 15, the Red Bull 400 will return to the Utah Olympic Park in Park City for the fourth year. While the distance may not sound daunting to some runners, a little context helps put it into perspective. This race gains 460 feet over the 400-meter course, making it an uphill sprint that’ll test even the stoutest athlete.
The Red Bull 400 is held on ski jumps around the world, with racers from every continent participating. And with 36 different stops over the past seven years, Park City still holds the designation of having the highest starting elevation (6,975 feet above sea level).
People can choose between two main race categories: full-distance solo for men and women, or a co-ed relay. In order to register, competitors must be at least 16 years of old. A parent or guardian must also sign a release waiver for anyone under the age of 18.
There’s no special gear needed for this near-vertical sprint. Regular running or trail running shoes work great. Just know that there are no extra spikes or traction devices allowed, and accessories like poles are forbidden.
One crucial rule is that once you step on the ramp, you have to finish. There’s no turning back. This is for each competitor’s safety, as well as for the other runners around them.
Spectators are welcome to watch racers at the base of the ski jump or in other designated spots alongside the course. Food from local vendors will be available and normal activities at the park will remain open.
