BYU softball falls to Drake in rematch after routing UAlbany in Eugene Regional

EUGENE, Ore. — Nicole Timmons pitched a complete-game shutout allowing just three hits, and Drake did all the scoring it needed in the top of the first to lift the Bulldogs to a win over BYU 3-0, eliminating the Cougars in an NCAA Regional late Friday night in Eugene, Oregon.

Arianna Paulson allowed just three runs on six hits for the Cougars, but the bats were dulled after breaking out for a rout of Albany in the first elimination game of the day.

Bridget Fleener went 2-for-3 with a double to lead BYU (36-22).

Drake jumped out early, when Taryn Pena and Kennedy Frank scored on Kailee Smith’s two-run single up the middle to take a 2-0 lead out of the first inning.

The Bulldogs added another in the top of the sixth, when pinch hitter Nicole Newman walked with the bases loaded to score Libby Ryan and put Drake up 3-0.

BYU lost to Drake 3-2 in Thursday’s opening round. The Bulldogs went on to lose to top-ranked regional host Oregon 5-0 in Friday’s winner’s bracket final, which set up the late-night rematch in Eugene.

Game One: BYU 16, Albany 0

At Eugene, Oregon, Caitlyn Alldredge and Brielle Breland reached slugged a home run to help the Cougars rout the Great Danes in an elimination game early Friday.

All dredge, who went 2-for-2 and had three RBI, ripped a three-run shot to left field that gave BYU a 6-0 lead in the first. Breland followed with a two-run shot over the center-field fence in the bottom of the third, and the Cougars never looked back.

Alexa Strid had a double and three RBI for BYU, and Libby Sugg supplied two RBI for the Cougars.

Autumn Moffat earned the win in the circle, scattering three hits in three innings with one strikeout and only one walk before Ariana Paulson finished off the rout with three strikeouts in the final two frames.
