PROVO — A 3-year-old girl died in a crash involving four vehicles on Sunday afternoon, officials said.

An 8-month-old boy was flown to Primary Children’s Hospital via a medical helicopter following the crash, Provo Police detective Nick Dupaix said.

The 3-year-old died at the scene. The boy was listed in critical condition and was still at the hospital on Sunday night, where staff members were "working hard," Provo Police officials said on Facebook.

The crash took place about 4:48 p.m. near the intersection of University Avenue and 3700 North.

Three cars were waiting in the southbound left-turn lane on University Avenue when a fourth car, a Pleasant Grove utility truck, came up behind them and struck the back car, a red station wagon, Provo Police officials said.

That caused a chain reaction involving all the cars where the station wagon hit a white sedan, and the white sedan hit a minivan, officials said. The utility truck was traveling at the 50 miles per hour speed limit, Dupaix said.

The two children were in the back of the car that was struck by the utility truck. The mother of the two children was in critical condition after the crash but was upgraded to stable condition later Sunday night.

Six other people had injuries from the crash, but were all expected to recover, Provo Police officials said.

Police were still investigating the crash as of Sunday night. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Provo Police at 801-852-6210.
