SALT LAKE CITY — Spring is in the air and so are acts of kindness.

Sometimes when you are feeling overwhelmed or stressed, someone gives you that extra boost of thoughtful service that buoys you back up. Here are examples of that type of kindness.

The KSL.com “Make Your Week” column features uplifting stories sent in from people outside the newsroom. To send in the stories that have made your day better, email them in 100 words or less to fjolley@ksl.com. Photos and videos are encouraged.

Dressing up the Sinclair dino

Crystal G.

“There is a young lady in South Jordan that has been dressing up the local Sinclair green dinosaur. She changes his outfit with each holiday and the locals are loving it! My kids have named him 'Gregory.' We all could certainly use more happy and uplifting these news lately so I thought I'd let you know.”

Ice cream after a car accident

Erin O.

“Last summer I was in a car accident, 36 weeks pregnant, and had my four children in the van with me. Someone came up to us and handed me and each of my children, as well as the driver of the other vehicle, a cup of soft serve ice cream from McDonald’s. As we stood in the hot summer sun for what felt like forever waiting to deal with police reports, tow trucks, etc., it made us all feel a lot better!”

Helping a puppy get a home

Kathleen D.

“Ron, a homeless man who was roaming the streets of Salt Lake City today, witnessed the unimaginable. A lady threw out her cute little puppy on a busy freeway entrance and abandoned him. He was not going to let this dog get ran over or hurt, his first instinct was to go out of his way to save this poor puppy. What is extraordinary about this situation is that Ron doesn't have a home himself, yet his goal was to find this abandoned puppy a home.

“Within minutes of posting (about finding a home for the puppy,) a lovely lady by the name of Lisa, and her daughter, were on their way to make sure this stray puppy does not go without a home.

When Lisa and her daughter arrived, they thanked the man profusely for being a hero and saving this cute puppy's life. Lisa, Lisa's daughter, and Ron were all in tears over the situation and Lisa knew she had to do what she (could) to help Ron for saving this dog, so she offered him $50. Ron did not want to accept the money, he said he just wanted to do what is right. After Lisa and her daughter kept insisting, he accepted with much gratitude and was ever so thankful for the money and that they were able to give this puppy a good home.”

Going above and beyond the call of duty

Adam W.

“I was picking up some kids for school this morning. I pulled into the cul-de-sac to pick up the last girl. The local Waste Management truck was picking up the trash that was out on the curbs. He came to the last house and the garbage cans were not at the curb, but up against the garage. The garbage man stopped his truck, got out and grabbed the garbage cans from the side of the garage and brought them to the curb, got back in his truck and emptied the cans. He could have just drove on.

“I would bet he didn't know that the homeowner is a single mother and this simple act probably was a huge blessing to her. It greatly impacted me. Made me ask myself, "What am I doing to help out others?" I contacted Waste Management through the Highland City website. They took down the address and are going to make sure their employee is recognized. Character is what you do when you don't think people are watching or doing what is right, not what you have to do."
