LOGAN — Defense ruled the day for most of roughly 70 snaps in Utah State’s second scrimmage of spring camp Friday afternoon at Maverik Stadium.
The Aggies recorded two interceptions, five pass breakups, two sacks and eight tackles for loss against sophomore quarterback Jordan Love, who had the only touchdown of the day on a 25-yard strike to senior DJ Nelson.
“Today was won by the defense,” Utah State coach Matt Wells said in a statement. “Great job by the defense, really the whole day. I thought they tackled well in space, they did a great job backed up in the red zone and they forced a couple turnovers.”
Freshman cornerback Zahodri Jackson had five tackles, an interception and a pass breakup to lead the Aggies, who got a pick and a pass breakup from freshman linebacker Jamaal Evans.
The offense gained just 133 yards on 34 carries, while Love and the quarterback group completed 11-of-24 passes for 85 yards and the touchdown to the former Logan High star.
Utah State resumes practice next Tuesday, March 27, with five practices remaining before the annual blue-and-white spring game on Saturday, April 7, at Maverik Stadium.
“I’ll reserve the right to have judgment on it if it can be a great team,” Wells said. “I think the next two weeks in spring practice and the next three to four months through the summer is going to dictate a lot. The decisions we make to invent and buy-in, and the decisions we make off the field will go a long way.
“The team is talented. It’s a team that’s playing better right now, and it looks better at this point than the last two teams the last couple of years. I think we’re a little further ahead.”
The Aggies finished the 2017 season with a 6-7 record, including a 27-20 loss to New Mexico State in the Arizona Bowl.
