SALT LAKE CITY — An overperforming storm dumped twice the amount of snow expected on parts of northern Utah Friday, causing at least 130 traffic accidents from Brigham City to Utah County and delaying hundreds of flights.

The storm was expected to bring only 1 to 3 inches of snow to the valley floors when it began early Friday. However by 5 p.m. it had delivered 6 inches of snow in some of those areas, the National Weather Service reported.

The Salt Lake International Airport recorded 5 inches of snow. The record there for this date is 6.4 inches, set in 1956.

Flight delays

At the airport, 427 inbound and outbound flights had been delayed as of 10 p.m., according to airport officials. Four flights had been canceled, while departure delays averaged 26 minutes.

Air travelers should call their airline for updates on individual flights, airport officials tweeted.

Roads

Dozens of slide-offs and accidents were reported and roads were slick from Davis and Weber counties to the Utah-Idaho border, according to the KSL Newsradio Traffic Center.

Utah County then got the brunt of the storm and roads quickly turned treacherous, according to Utah Highway Patrol, with troopers moving from crash to crash. Heavy snow slowed traffic, bringing it to a standstill in spots.

In the Salt Lake Valley, snow moved in from the west, leading to numerous traffic issues and a "very ugly" commute throughout the valley, the traffic center said.

Crashes

The Utah Highway Patrol reported 130 crashes Friday between the hours of 4 a.m. and 1 p.m., with only eight minor injuries reported.

A car on Riverdale Road in Ogden hit a power pole at the I-84 exchange Friday morning, knocking out power at the intersection.

More on the way

The Provo bench received 6 inches of snow. Snowbasin got more than double that at 14 inches.

A half-inch of snow fell in St. George, with lightning and hail there briefly, according to KSL Meteorologist Kevin Eubank.

Snow showers are expected to taper off Friday night as temperatures plummet into the teens. Another round of snow should begin around noon Saturday and could bring 2 to 4 inches to the valley floors, Eubank said.
