WEST VALLEY CITY — A 7-year-old boy was taken to a hospital in serious condition after being hit by a car on Thursday afternoon, according to police.

The boy is a student at nearby Hillside Elementary, according to a tweet from Granite School District.

The crash took place near 6000 W. 4190 South just before 4 p.m. Thursday, West Valley City police Lt. Steve Burke said.

The driver said she had sun in her eyes and did not see the boy, who was crossing the street from south to north, police said.

The woman was turning right off of 6000 West, Burke said. As she turned she hit the boy, who was just outside of the crosswalk area. The woman stopped and called police after the crash.

The boy had serious head wounds and may have had a broken bone, but was alert and was talking after he was hit, Burke said.

"He is very lucky," Burke said.
