SANDY — Police are investigating what they are calling a suspicious death Monday morning at a Sandy home.

Michael Hoffman Jr., 44, was found in the front yard of a home near 1300 East and 8000 South near some garbage cans, according to Sandy police.

Sandy Police Sgt. Jason Nielsen said the man showed no obvious signs of trauma, such as gunshot or stab wounds. The death is being investigated as a possible homicide, according to Nielsen.

"A 44-year-old man being dead on the front lawn — that in itself is suspicious," Nielsen said. When investigators arrived, he said, evidence at the scene "led them to believe it was more than random or medical or anything of that nature." Nielsen declined to describe the evidence, citing the pending investigation.

The man did not live at the home but was a friend of someone who rented there, Nielsen said. Police are now looking to question another renter who lives in the home. It was unclear how many people live in the home or what their relationship is.

"We are still trying to contact people to develop a timeline and gather information," Nielsen said, but the department as of Monday had "no suspects and nobody in custody."

Police were awaiting a cause of death determination from the state medical examiner.
