ASGARD — Hopefully you have already read Dave Clyde’s review of “Thor: Ragnarok,” and hopefully you already have plans to go see it because it is insanely entertaining and, in my opinion, the funniest movie of 2017.

While I’d like to go on and on about the hilarity of the movie and the brilliance of director Taika Watiti, that’s not what I’m here for. I’m here to let you know what you can expect from “Thor: Ragnarok” from a content perspective so you can decide for yourself if it’s the kind of movie that’s right for you and your kids.

As always, I’m not ever going to tell you what is or is not appropriate for you and your family; I'm simply here to let you know what’s in the film in hopes of giving you a heads up to make an informed decision.

Sexiness

So, this is a Marvel movie and just like any other Marvel movie we get a lot of shirtless male superheroes and some female superheroes who are wearing the tightest outfit possible without causing the blood to stop circulating through the body. I wouldn’t say the film tries to over-sexualize the characters, but if you’ve seen any other Marvel movie, you know what I’m talking about.

Be aware there are some very adult jokes that may fly over kid's heads, but it doesn’t change the fact that they're sprinkled throughout the film. We also get a gag about a naked Hulk as well as a glimpse of the green giant’s backside.

Violence

This is where Marvel movies always earn their rating and this new Thor is no different.

Related Story:

While the movie is a laugh riot, it also deals with some dark themes like patricide and genocide to name just two. A lot of people are killed violently and regularly. A lot of it is played for laughs, but other violent moments are dark and could come across as scary for younger audiences. The villain, in particular, is the goddess of death, and they don’t shy away from showing her do her work.

Language

I may need to go back and watch the earlier Marvel movies, but it seems to me they are adding more language in recent movies than they have in the past. I remember how surprised I was with the language in “Ant-Man” and “Guardians of the Galaxy,” but now that seems to be the norm at this point. Or maybe it always was and I am just becoming more sensitive as I get older.

The language in “Thor: Ragnarok” is on pace with the two films I just mentioned. I wouldn’t say it’s incredibly offensive, but there are a fair amount of curse words. However, they never hit the level of that so-called “R-rated word.” In my opinion, the language fits a milder PG-13 film and is about the level of most recent Marvel films.

Conclusion

I loved this movie, and that’s saying a lot because I am not a fan of the first two Thor outings. This movie is an absolute blast and had me laughing from start to finish. I believe the rating is earned and falls into your typical PG-13 realm. It’s not bordering on an R, but there is no mistaking it for a PG.

“Thor: Ragnarok” is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and brief suggestive material.
