SALT LAKE CITY — A 4-year-old girl died and a woman was injured when the SUV they were traveling in crashed into a tree Wednesday night, police say.

A woman and her daughter, 4-year-old Lila Johanson, were traveling westbound in an SUV on 2700 South near 1400 East just before 10 p.m. Wednesday, said Salt Lake City Police Lt. Dave Craycroft. The woman crossed over the eastbound lanes and crashed into a tree in front of a house. Neighbors, including an EMT and a University of Utah emergency room worker, heard the crash and rushed out to help, Craycroft said.

The woman sustained minor injuries, but Lila was severely injured. The EMT and emergency room worker began to perform CPR on her until an ambulance arrived. She was taken to Primary Children's Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after arriving, he said.

"Unfortunately, the injuries were too severe," Craycroft said.

Police do not believe speed was a factor in the crash but are still investigating the cause. They have not released any information on her mother.

A GoFundMe page* has been set up by Lila's family to help cover funeral expenses.

More information will be posted at it becomes available.
