LOGAN — Nick Stevens threw for 293 yards and two touchdowns, and Colorado State jumped out to a 24-0 advantage en route to a 27-14 win at Utah State to hand the Aggies their first loss in Mountain West play Saturday afternoon at Maverik Stadium.
Stevens opened the scoring for the Rams (3-2, 2-0 MW) with a 15-yard TD pass to Cameron Butler with 10:14 left in the first quarter. CSU didn’t take its foot off the gas, either, until DJ Nelson returned a blocked punt 15 yards for the Aggies to pull within 24-7 at halftime.
But the Rams’ defense would be too much for the hosts, holding the Aggies (3-2, 1-1 MW) out of the end zone on offense until quarterback Kent Myers hit LaJuan Hunt with a dump pass up the sideline for a 22-yard score with 1:37 remaining to pull within 27-14.
That was as close as it would get for Utah State, which averaged just 1.77 yards on 26 rushes. Myers completed 10-of-18 passes for 87 yards and a touchdown, and Hunt ran for 19 yards on eight carries, while adding 2 catches for 19 yards and his score.
Utah State continues Mountain West play at home next Saturday, Oct. 14 against Wyoming. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. MDT at Maverik Stadium.
Colorado State hosts Nevada in their conference home opener Saturday, Oct. 14 at 8:15 p.m. MDT.
