Wildcats looking for first win in Bozeman since 2008

OGDEN — Weber State continues Big Sky Conference play as it visits Bozeman and the Montana State Bobcats.

The Wildcats in their conference opener defeated UC Davis 41-3. After the win, Weber State is now ranked 18th in the FCS coaches poll and 20th in the STATS FCS poll. Eastern Washington is the only other Big Sky team ranked.

The Bobcats also won their first conference battle against North Dakota 49-21. Montana State had 515 yards of offense in the game, 341 of which were on the ground.

The Bobcats are led by quarterback Chris Murray, who threw for 174 yards and ran for 132. Murray also had three passing and one rushing touchdowns. Montana State freshman running back Troy Andersen also ran for 131 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

The Wildcat defense held UC Davis to only 13 yards rushing for the game Saturday. UC Davis had more success in its passing game, throwing for 360 yards. Weber State’s defense was able to get to the quarterback, recording five sacks and two interceptions.

The Wildcats' defense leads the Big Sky, only allowing 15 points in the first three games. Weber State also leads the conference in rushing yards allowed at 89.2 yards per game.

The Wildcats have only won twice in their last 14 meetings with the Bobcats, with their last victory coming in 2008.

Weber State is led by senior quarterback Stefan Cantwell. KSL named Cantwell its athlete of the week with his performance against UC Davis. Cantwell threw for 205 yards on only 11 passes. He finished with seven completions, three of them for touchdowns.

Freshman Wildcat receiver Rashid Shaheed had two receptions for more than 50 yards apiece, one of them for a 67-yard touchdown. Shaheed has a total 326 yards receiving over the first three games, which leads the nation.

Weber State running back Treshawn Garrett also had a 98-yard run that was the longest play from scrimmage in Weber State history. His run is also the longest touchdown in the FCS this season.

The Big Sky picked Weber State fifth in the preseason polls; Montana State ranked sixth.

The Wildcats take on the Bobcats on Saturday at 1:40 p.m.
