SALT LAKE CITY — Following an earthquake that shook central Mexico Tuesday afternoon, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a statement on the status of church missionaries in the area.

“We are heartbroken to see the destruction and suffering that is occurring as a result of another serious earthquake in Mexico,” said church spokesman Eric Hawkins in the statement. “At this time, it’s difficult to understand fully the impact, including to church members and facilities.”

The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude 7.1 quake hit at 1:14 p.m. (2:15 p.m. EDT) and was centered near the Puebla state town of Raboso, about 76 miles (123 kilometers) southeast of Mexico City.

As of Tuesday night, The Associated Press reported, over 130 people were killed due to the quake.

Hawkins said the Missionary Training Center in Mexico was not damaged, and all missionaries there were safe. He said local mission presidents were working to determine the status of all missionaries in the region.

“Some have reported that all (missionaries) are safe, while others are still assessing the situation. This is complicated by damaged communications systems, large distances and travel difficulties,” he said.

Hawkins said mission presidents will contact the families of the missionaries with information regarding their loved ones.

“Mission presidents will keep families updated as they are able, and we will provide additional details as we learn more,” he said. “We pray for their safety and invite others to join us in our prayers for Mexico and her people."
