LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Tony Finau needed a spark to end his season strong in the FedEx Cup playoffs.

The Lehi resident got it in the final round of the BMW Championship.

Finau shot a blistering 7-under-par 64 for a career-low round at Conway Farms golf course in Lake Forest, Illinois, Sunday to finish tied for seventh at the BMW Championship.

More importantly, Finau’s eight birdies — including a clutch chip-in from just off the green on the par-5, 585-yard No. 18 — rocketed him to No. 24 in the FedEx Cup standings and earned him a spot in the PGA Tour Championship at East Lake golf club in Atlanta.

“Putting was everything, and making those crucial pars is huge,” Finau said after Thursday’s opening round. “I’ve been pleased with the way the rounds went.

“I try not to think too much of numbers. My experience has taught me that. Just come out, do your best, and give yourself a chance to win. If you do that, you’ll be in a pretty good position at the end of the week.”

This year’s Tour Championship will be the first ever for the 28-year-old West High product. He’s recorded just one PGA Tour victory since turning pro in 2007 with 65 cuts made.

But Finau took just 20 putts in his final round at the BMW Championship, including nailing an astonishing 17-of-18 putts from inside 25 feet, to secure his career milestone.

“I was able to just somehow get it in the hole when I needed to,” Finau told Golf Digest. “It’s such a gratifying feeling right now.”

In addition to his spot in the Tour Championship, Finau's round was also enough to earn an exemption into next April's Masters at Augusta National Golf Club.
