FREMONT COUNTY — Six Brigham Young University-Idaho students were hospitalized Wednesday night following a rollover crash that could have been deadly.

The four women and two men were traveling to Rexburg from the Civil Defense Caves on Red Road around 9:00 p.m. when the wreck happened, EastIdahoNews.com reported.

“The male driver of a Jeep Grand Cherokee went off the shoulder of the road, overcorrected and the vehicle then rolled four or five times,” Fremont County Sheriff Sgt. Cody Gudmunson tells EastIdahoNews.com.

The driver was ejected from the Jeep and flown to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center with serious injuries, according to Gudmunson. The five passengers were taken to the hospital by ambulance with minor to serious injuries.

“We believe excessive speed played a factor and (some of) the occupants were not wearing safety belts,” Gudmunson says. “They should all be ok but they are very, very lucky as this could have been a lot worse.”
