SALT LAKE CITY — Opening weekend of college football has come and gone and there were a few local standouts that highlight Week 1 of play.

Each week, the KSL.com sports staff will name its local Player of the Week for their performance over the weekend. This week, the award goes to University of Utah sophomore Tyler Huntley.

Tyler Huntley, QB, Utah

The sophomore quarterback started out slow in his debut as starter, throwing an interception in the first few minutes of the game. But after settling into his role as the leader of the offense, Huntley got to work and picked apart the North Dakota defense.

Huntley finished the game throwing for 227 yards and one touchdown on 23-of-32 passing — an impressive 72 percent completion percentage. The sophomore QB added 70 yards and two touchdowns on the ground in Utah’s 37-16 win over the Fighting Hawks.

Teammate Zack Moss called Huntley’s performance “outstanding” but added that “he's still got some work to do.”

“For his first game as a quarterback, I think he did pretty good,” Moss said.

Honorable mentions

  • Darren Carrington, WR, Utah: Carrington was Huntley’s favorite target in the win over North Dakota. The senior finished with 10 receptions for 129 yards and the team's only receiving touchdown.
  • Stefan Cantwell, QB, Weber State: Cantwell led the Wildcats to an impressive 76-0 win over Montana-Western Saturday. Cantwell threw for 163 yards and two touchdowns on 10-of-14 passing.
