HERRIMAN — Lone Peak’s offense looked to still be on summer vacation as the high school football season opened.

Brock Jones woke the Knights up Friday night.

Jones threw three touchdown passes to help the Knights pull away from their former region rival Mustangs for a 26-13 season-opening win Friday night in the KSL Game of the Week.

“It’s the first game of the season. That kicks off the season,” Jones said. “They’re a tough team; give it to Herriman. But it’s a good win.”

Maeakafa Keakehe opened the scoring for the Mustangs (0-1) with an 80-yard TD reception the gave the hosts a 6-0 lead after the first quarter.

Herriman’s Tarvis Darger gave the Mustangs a 13-7 lead in the third quarter. But it was the last time they would hold an advantage, as the Knights finished the game with 16 unanswered points, capped by Jones’ 7-yard strike to Cody Collins to ice the win.

Lehi 72, Alta 66 (2OT)

At Alta, Lehi’s Cammon Cooper had nine touchdowns in a scoreboard-breaking affair Friday night at Alta High School.

Tenth time is the charm — and a new Utah High School Activities Association single-game state record.

Cooper threw for 599 yards with 10 touchdowns with just one interception as the Pioneers rallied by host Alta, 72-66 in double-overtime in Friday night’s season-opener in Sandy.

"I couldn't even describe that," said Cooper, whose 10 TDs are two more than three other quarterbacks in state history, per the UHSAA record book. "Everyone was doing their job."

"I can't even talk right now," he added with a gasp of air.

Cooper, an Elite 11 quarterback who has committed to Washington State, tossed his ninth touchdown to BYU-bound tight end Dallin Holker for a 24-yard score on the first possession of overtime. Zach Engstrom responded with a 1-yard TD jaunt — his fifth score of the game — to force a second extra period.

Will Dana threw for 322 yards and six touchdowns to lead the Hawks (0-1), but the Pioneers rallied to tie the game on Wyatt Mosher’s 21-yard field goal as time expired in regulation.

Lehi hosts Pine View next Friday in the team’s 2017 home-opener, while Alta hosts Woods Cross at 7 p.m. MDT.

Mountain Crest 22, Highland 21

At Highland, Brady Hall scored on an 8-yard run, then threw for the 2-point conversion on the reverse to help the Mustangs rally past the Rams.

Highland struck first when Cole Peterson found Marlon Jones for a 70-yard strike, but the two teams remained deadlocked at 14-14 going into the final period.

Peterson found Jones with a 22-yard bomb in the fourth quarter to take the late lead. But Mountain Crest rallied when Hall scored his third touchdown of the game to eke out the win on the conversion.

Viewmont 17, Northridge 14

At Viewmont, Davis Weir threw his second touchdown pass of the game to Austin Johnson in the game’s final moments to help the Vikings rally past Northridge.

With the Knights clinging to a 14-10 lead, Viewmont forced a stop on fourth and 1 at the Viewmont 41 with 39 seconds left to force one final possession. The Vikings then drove 59 yards in 35 seconds, capped by Johnson’s game-winning touchdown catch with four seconds remaining.

Weir completed 15-of-26 passes for 170 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, and ran for another 37 yards on six rushes.
