OGDEN — Defense ruled the day at Weber State’s first scrimmage of fall camp Saturday morning at Stewart Stadium.

The offense? It knows it.

“The quarterbacks didn’t think it was good enough; they’re running now,” Weber State coach Jay Hill said, following the exhibition. “Them taking ownership means a lot to me. It means we are on the right track with them.

“Execution has been good to this point. We’ve just got to get back to what we’ve done in prior practice.”

Keilan Benjamin and Copper Hills alum Winston Reid each had a pick-six to lead the defense.

“The defensive line looked very good, and a lot of our corners stepped up,” said senior cornerback Taron Johnson, an All-Big Sky preseason honoree. “We didn’t even have a lot of ones in, and the backups looked good.”

The offense had a few good moments in the 90-play scrimmage — but the defense defined the line.

“I really liked the physicality of the defense,” Hill said. “We had a couple of guys out, and the backups stepped up and did a great job."

Wildcat backup quarterback Justin Shaw led a touchdown drive, but the highlights were fewer on the offensive side.

“The offense will come along," Johnson said. “It was a tough day for them, but they’ll get the hang of it.”

Weber State opens the season Sept. 2 at home against Montana Western. It will also face Cal and Sacramento State before returning home for the Big Sky Conference opener Sept. 23 against UC Davis.
