SALT LAKE CITY — The Utes wrapped up their sixth practice of fall camp Saturday, but not with praises of the good from several coaches.
Coaches and players were increasingly open about the squad’s performance following the first full week of training camp — especially on offense, which has already seen injuries.
Utah brought in a new offensive coordinator and a lot of new faces on that side of the ball this year, which has been a focus of fall camp.
Incumbent starter Troy Williams and sophomore Tyler Huntley continued to duel at quarterback, and the position battle at wide receiver has also been intense.
“We were a little sloppy,” offensive coordinator Troy Taylor said. “It probably wasn’t our best. But the energy was good; we just didn’t execute at the level I would like us to.
“We had five good practices, one that was mediocre, but we’ll bounce back.”
Saturday belonged to the defense, which forced more turnovers than head coach Kyle Whittingham would prefer to see out of the offense.
“I think it was a step forward,” Whittingham said, “but we turned the ball over more today than at any point of fall camp. That’s not good to see."
