In the world of fashion, it’s hard to tell which trends will resurface again (overalls, anyone?) and which will forever rot away in their frosted tipped coffins. Home décor works similarly, and trends that were hot 20 years ago are making a comeback.

Here are some top trends to watch out for when looking to decorate.

Patterned wall paper

Look no further than downtown hot-spot restaurants and you’re almost guaranteed to see patterns taking over their interiors. Whether it’s just one wall, the bathroom or throughout an entire room, patterns are coming in hot. The great thing about wallpaper, which peaked from the ‘60s through ‘80s, is now it’s easier to remove, so you don’t need to worry about living with it permanently.

Geometric designs

Seeing the word “geometric” might bring you right back to the ‘70s, but there is a huge trend booming of the same shapes that used to be seen on clothes, now on anything from pillows and rugs to lampshades.

Textured flooring

Whether tile, wood or carpet, people are starting to add lots of textures to their floors by mixing materials throughout the home. Wall-to-wall carpet (if the right quality) can be a great soft edge to an otherwise more hardened room and wood-look tile is a hot out-of-the-oven trend that looks like it is here to stay. With the quality of tile up leveling in recent years, it’s easier now than ever to find durable and authentic-looking flooring.

Bright colors

Bright is back, and two colors are at the top of the list. Orange (shades like papaya and coral or creamsicle and blood orange) and green (anything from lime green to emerald) are two that are making a huge comeback. Use these colors anywhere, from wallpaper to throw pillows and rugs or chairs. Splash in some color into your living room or kitchen.

Brass

In the 1990s, brass was rampant but with a shinier and newer look. Nowadays, brass, found on handles, knobs, sinks, frames and fixtures has made a comeback. However, the new trend is to have it look a little more rusted. People are choosing brass over chrome and brushed nickel to get the antiqued look that is everywhere right now.

Shaggy carpet

Shaggy carpet has long been out of style, but it’s made a comeback because of the au-natural trends in both home decor and other areas of fashion and lifestyle (the feeling of your feet sinking and being hugged by soft pillows doesn’t hurt, either). Flokati is the style that is hot on the scene. Real flokati is made of wool, but there are synthetic versions all over that give the same feel.
