MUSIC TOWN — Humans of all sizes love “the next big thing,” and this year one of those big things for kids is fidget spinners.

If you know a child, you know exactly what a fidget spinner is — a toy you hold between a finger and thumb that spins. Marketers claim that the motions help relieve stress, but some schools have started to ban them as distracting toys.

However, that doesn’t mean fidget spinners are bad. Toys are meant to be fun, and fidget spinners can certainly be fun, especially when people start getting creative with them. You can find people learning tricks, finding new uses, and creating elaborate, custom spinners all over YouTube.

One of the more creative fidget spinner videos I’ve seen comes from local violinist Rob Landes. Landes’ usual fare includes intricate and skillful performances where he layers sounds with his violin and a looper pedal.

In this video, Landes keeps the looper but ditches his bow. He instead uses a fidget spinner on the strings to create a unique version of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.” (Watch him play his impressive original take on “Billie Jean” and “Thriller” here.)

According to Landes, you too can play the violin with a fidget spinner, all it takes is 30 years of intense training to learn the violin and three hours to learn how to use a fidget spinner on the strings.

To learn more about Landes’ live performances or to book him for your next event, visit his Facebook page and YouTube channel.
