SALT LAKE CITY — As expected, Provo Mayor John Curtis joined an already crowded field of Republicans on Thursday to replace Congressman Jason Chaffetz.

Curtis jumped into the 3rd Congressional District race after what he called the "deepest retrospect in my life" about a decision.

"I wanted to be sure I was the right person, that I had the right qualifications and that it would be the right thing to do," Curtis said. He intends to try to win the nomination at a GOP convention but will also collect signatures to get on the primary ballot.

Chaffetz, R-Utah, announced earlier this month that he is stepping down June 30, creating the need for a special election.

Curtis wasn't the only candidate to file his candidacy with the state elections office the past two days. The filing deadline is Friday at 5 p.m.

Democrat Kathie Allen, a Cottonwood Heights doctor, also officially entered the race. She announced her candidacy months ago and has raised more than $500,000 on Crowdpac.com.

Alpine resident Stewart Peay, a lawyer, has also filed as a Republican as has Brigham Cottam, a National Geographic field producer who lives in Salt Lake City, according to his Facebook page. Another Republican, Paul Fife, of Provo, also filed Thursday.

As of Thursday, nine Republicans and three Democrats have filed as candidates.

The other Republicans are Alpine resident Tanner Ainge; Sen. Margaret Dayton, R-Orem; Rep. Brad Daw, R-Orem; Sen. Deidre Henderson, R-Spanish Fork; and former state legislator Chris Herrod.

The other Democrats are Cottonwood Heights mental health worker Ben Frank and Monticello biologist Carl Ingwell.
