MAGNA — Three people were taken into custody following a traffic stop Saturday morning that turned into a fugitive hunt that lasted throughout the day.

A Utah Highway Patrol trooper stopped an eastbound gray Nissan Rogue for a lane violation on I-80 about 10:30 a.m. near the Saltair resort. The trooper was with the driver when two passengers got out the vehicle and ran away.

One man fled into the mountains south of I-80. Troopers were investigating claims that a second man had carjacked a vehicle and headed west.

The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody at the scene. Police from numerous agencies, with the assistance of the Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter, helped in the search for the two men.

UHP Lt. Beau Mason said calls from good Samaritans played a role in the capture of both men. Mason said K-9 units and a infrared cameras on the helicopter aided in locating the fugitives, the last of which was found hiding under some brush.

Mason said troopers recovered marijuana in the vehicle, more than a couple pounds, but not what they considered a "huge load."
