OGDEN — Weber State’s defense made the first big play of the annual spring game at Stewart Stadium, and the offense nearly caught back up before falling 46-38 in the modified scoring system.

Xequille Harry returned a fumble for a touchdown on the first play of the game for the Wildcats, who will open the 2017 season Sept. 2 against Montana Western before non-conference trips to Cal and Sacramento State.

Stefan Cantwell cemented himself as the starting quarterback Saturday, completing 9-of-14 passes for 116 yards, and sophomore Justin Shaw threw for 122 yards and a touchdown.

“Our veteran players are really good, and we had some younger guys perform well, too,” Weber State coach Jay Hill said. “Stefan Cantwell had a great spring and will be our starter going into fall camp, and Justin Shaw is right there with him. I like the progression our team has made this spring. We have a chance to be really good; we just need to keep taking the next step forward.”

Freshman David Jones led all rushers with 60 yards on the ground. Raphael Longangu led the receivers with six catches for 64 yards and a touchdown, and TyJuan Prince added 41 yards receiving and a six-yard touchdown run.
