SALT LAKE CITY — Happy spring! Springtime brings newness and excitement and for many, it brings spring cleaning and new goals.

If you’ve been thinking about improving your eating habits, your exercise or movement habits and your overall wellness, this resource list is for you.

It seems like everywhere we look these days, we’re bombarded by conflicting, confusing and complicated ways to be healthy. Whoever said that improving your health has to be difficult and time-consuming was wrong. When you can find ways that are unique to you and your needs, ways that are enjoyable and ways that you can see benefits, they help you actually improve your health and happiness and last longer.

Here is a non-comprehensive list of nutrition, fitness and general wellness services around Salt Lake City and other areas of Utah. These services are taught by experts who can help you make the changes you want to make.

Nutrition services in Salt Lake:

1. Elise McVicar

Who she works with: General population weight loss and athletes/athletic performance.

What she can do for you: Nutrition coaching, meal plans, grocery shop planning and one-on-one nutrition coaching allows for a unique, personalized plan to implement small lifestyle changes that allow you to reach your goals.

2. Katherine Zavodni Nutrition

Who she works with: Those struggling with disordered eating behavior or with diagnosed eating disorders. Also enjoys working to help individuals with a history of chronic dieting and weight cycling, as well as general weight and body image concerns, to learn to trust their bodies and develop intuitive wellness practices. Counsels parents who are struggling with eating and feeding concerns with their children, addressing issues such as picky eating, weight concerns, food preoccupation and mealtime stress.

What she can do for you: Individual nutrition/wellness counseling, eating disorder nutrition therapy, child nutrition/feeding support for parents

3. Paige Smathers Nutrition

Who she works with: People who have disordered relationships with food, body and exercise.

What she can do for you: Has a 10-week online course that walks you through how to create a healthy relationship with food and your body. It is currently closed for enrollment but will be available again soon. I also provide non-dieting, weight-neutral support to people who struggle with a chaotic and dysfunctional relationship with food, enabling you to find sustainable and realistic solutions that stick.

Fitness resources in Salt Lake

1. Baile Dance Fitness Studio

Who they work with: Anyone who enjoys the benefits of dance fitness for fitness, fun or both.

What they can do for you: Our studio is a great community for men and women in Salt Lake who want a fun, inviting and non-competitive place to work out.

2. Core 7 Fitness

Who they work with: Anyone over the age of 14.

What they can do for you: We offer unique, low-to-no-impact group fitness classes. Some of which are Sculpt, Cardi-Yo, Pound, Werq, Candlelight Yoga and more. We use motivation in classes and celebrate with them when they reach their goals. For example, we had one client lose 80 pounds and threw her an '80s party when she reached that goal. We always hold contests and challenges for our members.

3. Summer Kaye Fitness

Who she works with: I work primarily with busy women, helping them to make their health a priority.

What she can do for you: One-on-one personal training, group training, fitness and nutrition. She takes a three-prong approach with her clients: physical health, nutrition and mental health. You can't have one without the other; it's the mind-body connection.

General wellness resources in Salt Lake:

1. University of Utah Wellness and Integrative Health

Who they work with: Community members and University of Utah employees

What they can do for you: Provides a wide range of nutrition, fitness and wellness services for Utah residents. Provides nutrition, fitness testing and prescription services to generally healthy people who want to improve their overall health and well-being, as well as people who are living with chronic conditions and need condition-specific nutrition and fitness programs.

We provide:

  • Supervised medical gym
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Fitness assessment/exercise prescription
  • Fitness testing (bod pod and RMR)
  • Fitness classes (yoga, boxing, dance, etc.)
  • Health coaching
  • Massage therapy
  • Intensive lifestyle program
  • National diabetes prevention program
  • Build a bone
  • Senior health program
Helps individuals maintain or improve their health status via individually tailored programs and follow-up throughout the intervention. Everyone has access to one-on-one assistance in the medically supervised gym. They also refer individuals to specialized programs as needs arise in order to address whole wellness.

2. Into the Woods Wellness, Rachelle Ballard

Who she works with: Anyone who is wanting to shift their mentality of health/fitness to that of a wellness-based lifestyle. Anyone who is ready to stop hurting their body and ready to embrace and discover their individual and personalized recipe for wellness.

What she can do for you: Offers a completely individualized recipe for wellness using movement, meditation, mindfulness, mental and emotional processing and myriad other tools that create a positive experience with health and wellness. Utilizes movement, meditation, mindfulness, verbal processing and myriad other tools.

Nutrition/fitness resources outside Salt Lake

1. Marysa Cardwell, Davis County

Who she works with: Anyone who is ready to work hard to achieve their nutrition and fitness goals.

What she can do for you: Help you make realistic goals together. Provides education, coaching and encouragement as well as the day-to-day or week-to-week accountability. Helps people in weight loss/maintenance, healthy eating, eating disorders, intuitive eating, special diets, sports nutrition, exercise prescriptions and programs.

2. Nutrition Breakthru, Valerie Mey, Park City

Who she works with: Student-athletes for performance, nutrition counseling for weight loss, heart disease, osteoarthritis and overall eating better with a better relationship with food.

What she can do for you: Nutrition counseling, sports nutrition counseling, grocery store tours. Nutrition Breakthru strives to encourage and educate individuals to make better lifestyle choices for optimal health through nutrition, physical activity and emotional balance.

3. Nourish Nutrition Services, Kristi Terry, Provo/Utah Valley

Who she works with: Nourish Nutrition offers more affordable private pay services for less than the typical insurance co-pay. Clients build their own meal plans and or grocery shopping lists with one on one coaching from a registered dietitian. Specializing in individuals with eating disorders/disordered eating, diabetes and weight management, but will take on motivated clients with complicated organ failure or GI issues.

What she can do for you: Help you recognize hunger/satiety, manage emotional eating, evaluate foods available at home for nutrient density and diagnosis appropriateness, identify achievable nutrition goals. Nourish Nutrition offers public speaking, meal plans, customized grocery shopping lists, grocery store tours and health coaching. First session requires face to face assessment, but follow up can be arranged via email, text, phone consultation, grocery store tour, over a lunch appointment or at gym.

Online fitness and nutrition services:

1. EffiFit

Who she works with: Busy professionals who want to get fit and start incorporating healthy eating and exercise into their lifestyle. Age range is generally 25-45 years of age. They have had experience exercising in the past and want to get back to exercising regularly and creating healthy habits so that they don't have to rely solely on motivation and willpower.

What she can do for you: Offers personalized workout plans and nutrition coaching that help my clients get fit, increase their energy and develop long-term health habits.

2. Your Choice Nutrition, Brittany Poulson

Who she works with: Adults (mainly women ages 20-40) working to improve their health, achieve optimal wellness, manage weight and prevent disease. I do provide specialized services in diabetes education, working with adults to manage their diabetes. I also work with pregnant women to help them achieve a healthy pregnancy and help set them up for breastfeeding success and returning to a healthy body postpartum.

What she can do for you: Provides one-on-one nutrition education, accountability, support and meal planning guidance and tips to help people live a sustainable and realistic healthy lifestyle in their unique way through 100 percent online nutrition coaching.

3. Nourish Nutrition Co

Who she works with: Busy women who want to live happier, healthier lives, but don’t want to be stuck in a restrictive and miserable dieting cycle.

What she can do for you: Provides services such as support group membership, one-on-one health and nutrition coaching, as well as the support and encouragement to make and stick to your own personal health and wellness goals.
