COLUMBUS, OHIO — A few local players received national attention in Ohio this weekend.

Zach Wilson of BYU and Jordan Love of Utah State were two of eight quarterbacks around the nation to be named to a list of 2019 players to watch by the Touchdown Club of Columbus.

Another Aggie, David Woodward, was also named to the list, and is one of only four linebackers and seven total defensive players to be nominated.

The Touchdown Club of Columbus presents awards to top college and high school athletes and coaches at the conclusion of each season. Awards are given for each position and include the Sammy Baugh Award for the top college passer and the Jack Lambert Award for the top linebacker.

Previous winners of the top passer award include current NFL starters Patrick Mahomes and Derek Carr, and seven former Cougars, including Steve Sarkisian, Ty Detmer, Robbie Bosco, Steve Young, Jim McMahon, Marc Wilson and Gary Sheide.

Former linebackers to win the Jack Lambert Award include NFL starters Khalil Mack, Luke Kuechly, and Von Miller.

Wilson started the Cougars’ last seven games last season, setting a BYU freshman record with a pass-efficiency rating of 157.23 on his way to 1,578 yards, 12 touchdowns and a 65.9 percent completion rate. The freshman also finished the season with a memorable performance in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, completing 18-of-18 passes and setting a BYU single-game record for consecutive passes without an incompletion.

Love started all 13 games for the Aggies, setting school passing records with 3,567 yards and 32 touchdowns, and a pass-efficiency rating of 158.3. Love also finished the season strong, throwing for four touchdowns and 359 yards in the Aggies’ New Mexico Bowl win over North Texas.

Woodward led the Aggies in tackles last season, recording 134 tackles to go along with five sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss during his sophomore campaign. Woodward recorded 10 tackles and an interception during the Aggies’ bowl win.
