SALT LAKE CITY — The 5A high school football champion will be determined this weekend, and it features two teams that are familiar with one another.

The Corner Canyon Chargers and the Skyridge Falcons will be squaring off in a Friday night matchup for the right to call themselves champions. The Chargers will out for blood after a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of the Falcons in last years semifinals.

It appeared the Chargers were headed to the championship game last year when they jumped out to a 26-7 lead on Skyridge early in the game. But Corner Canyon slowly watched as its lead crumbled away in the second half to a semifinal exit.

Skyridge's then-junior quarterback Jayden Clemons connected with wide receiver Nathan Upham on back-to-back passes, one of which was a fingertip catch for the game-winning touchdown.

Clemons, again, is leading the Falcons offense this year as a senior and Skyridge has been dominant by winning 11 straight games after dropping their season opener. The Falcons still have something to prove, as well, after being dominated in the championship game by Lehi last year.

It won’t be easy, though, as the Chargers' last loss came in that semifinals game against Skyridge. They have since gone undefeated this year and would love to get revenge for last year's heartbreak.

“It hurt so bad last year and just remembering that feeling for so long makes this feel amazing” Corner Canyon senior running back and linebacker Caden Johnson said, reflecting on last year's loss. “It’s great to get another shot at Skyridge and we’re going to prepare as hard as we can this week to make sure we get it done.”

Both schools are relatively new high schools but have had quick success. Corner Canyon began in the fall of 2013 and Skyridge began in the fall of 2016. However, the winner would claim their school's first high school football championship in school history.

The Chargers are 0-2 all time against the Falcons and both losses came in the closing minutes of the game. The Chargers will be hoping they can change their fortunes against the Falcons and advance to the championship.

The 5A championship game will take place Friday, Nov. 16 at 6:30 p.m.
