SALT LAKE CITY — Bingham High School lit up the field Friday night in a 45-7 win over visiting Westlake.

Westlake was quickly overwhelmed in an odd game where they trailed 45-0 in the first half. Due to a power outage, there was no scoreboard, field lights, and no game clock until the power finally came on with 7:01 left in the second quarter.

“That was the first game I played in a power outage that just went on and off” Bingham’s defensive tackle Tyler Ki explained, “It didn’t affect us at all. We just went out and did our assignments.”

Bingham wasted no time and rolled over Westlake early. Midway through the second quarter, Bingham went up 35-0. It had become dark enough that the game was about to be called early. Both teams were cleared off of the sidelines and just as the last players were trickling off the field, the lights came back on and power was restored. The teams were brought back onto the fields and play resumed.

Less than a minute later, Bingham’s defensive line burst through the middle and applied serious pressure to the Thunders’ senior quarterback Kaden Johnson. He quickly tried to get rid of the ball and threw it directly to defensive tackle Ki who recorded an interception for the Miners’ defensive line.

“I was trying to get to the end zone for 6 points,” Ki said laughing “but I got tackled”.

Although Ki didn’t quite make it into the end zone, he did set the Miners up for a field goal which brought the score to 38-0 with 3:20 remaining in the half.

With 2:50 left in the half, the lights went out once again. The officials determined they would take the 20-minute halftime break and would finish the second, third, and fourth quarters afterward. The lights came back on before the players returned and the final 2 minutes of the second quarter resumed.

Lolani Langi, who has offers from BYU, Utah, and Utah State, intercepted a pass at the end of the second quarter, which led to a touchdown run from Bingham’s Cameron Mitchell to make it 45-0 with 51 seconds left in the half.

The brightest spot of the game for Westlake came with 10:43 remaining in the fourth quarter when Johnson scampered for a 17-yard touchdown in what ended up being the final points of the game as Bingham won 45-7.

Bingham is ranked No. 1 in the state and improves to 6-0. They will be heading out on the road next week to face Lone Peak.

Westlake falls to 2-4 and will be playing at Pleasant Grove next week. Jeff Thomas
