PROVO — BYU’s running back room, once thought to be an area with the most question marks after the 2018 season, is getting full.
South Carolina junior Ty’Son Williams announced Sunday afternoon that he will be leaving the Gamecocks and transferring to BYU as a graduate transfer, per his Twitter feed.
The junior will have one final season of collegiate eligibility to use in Provo.
"I want to thank all the coaches and programs who reached out to give me an opportunity to continue my education for my last year," Williams tweeted. "With that being said I will continue my last year of eligibility at Brigham Young University."
Williams rushed for 799 yards and five touchdowns in two seasons at South Carolina, helping the Gamecocks to a 7-6 record last year and a 4-4 mark in SEC play with 328 yards and four scores.
Prior to his time in Columbia, Williams — who hails from Sumter, South Carolina — spent one season at North Carolina. He rushed for just 57 yards on limited production for the Tar Heels, sparking his first transfer.
In the Cougars, Williams joins a running back room where two of the top three rushers graduated in Squally Canada and Matt Hadley. He’ll filter in behind lead returner Lopini Katoa, who sat out parts of spring football with injuries, and Rice graduate transfer Emmanuel Esupkpa.
Senior Kavika Fonua is also back after struggling with injuries for the Cougars, as well as redshirt freshman Tyler Allgeier, and former Kearns High standout Sione Finau to add depth at running back for the Cougars.
BYU will also add walk-on running back Alec Wyble-Meza, a 1,109-yard rusher at Scottsdale Community College in his native Arizona that will join the team in time for fall camp.
