HERRIMAN — Utah’s newest high school now has a name.

A new high school, slated to open in Herriman in fall 2019, will be named Mountain Ridge High School and its mascot will be the Sentinels, according to a statement from the Jordan School District Wednesday. The new school is located at 14100 S. Autumn Crest Blvd.

The school’s colors will be scarlet red, gray and white.

The name was selected after a three-month process that whittled down potential school names and mascot ideas. In all, 200 school names were submitted, and there were six finalists for a school name and five finalists for a mascot, according to a Facebook post Tuesday night from Jordan School District board member Darrell Robinson.

By Tuesday, Mountain Ridge and Blackridge were the top remaining names for the new school. Sentinel, which is a guard or soldier assigned to keep watch of something, was favored over Raptors or Bulls, Robinson wrote.

Robinson said the process to choose a name came from input from parents, students, school administrators and community members. It was approved by the Jordan School District board Tuesday night.

The Deseret News reported that the new school will participate in Class 5A athletics and activities in Region 7. Other schools in that class and region include Alta, Jordan, Lehi, Mountain View, Orem, Timpanogos and Timpview.
