OREM — A new leader took over Utah Valley University this week.

Dr. Astrid S. Tuminez officially became president of the university Sept. 17, according to a news release from the university.

Tuminez was previously based in Singapore and worked for Microsoft as the company’s director for corporate, external and legal affairs in southeast Asia, according to the release. The Utah State Board of Regents selected Tuminez in April after an international search for a new UVU president.

“I want to say thank you to the amazing students, faculty, staff, and community at UVU,” Tuminez said in the release. “There are many challenges ahead, but I am extremely excited to start this new chapter at UVU. Together we can do amazing things.”

The board of regents considered four finalists before selecting Tuminez in a unanimous vote.

The previous UVU president was Matthew S. Holland. He was called to serve as mission president for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints North Carolina Raleigh Mission in July.

Jeffery E. Olson served as the interim president for the university during the search. Olson returned to his previous role as UVU senior vice president of academic affairs when Tuminez became president.

“(Tuminez) is very committed to UVU’s open-admission, integrated community college and university mission,” Olson said in the release.
