SOUTH JORDAN — One of the top high school football coaches in Utah has stepped down.
John Lambourne, who has led powerhouse Bingham High for six years and spent 36 years as a coach at four different high schools, is stepping down from his position, effective immediately, he told the Deseret News late Monday night.
Lambourne took over the head coaching job of the 11-time state champion Miners following the retirement of former coach Dave Peck. The offensive coach worked as an assistant at Bingham for 20 years in various capacities, and helped the Miners to state titles in 2014, 2016 and 2017.
“I’m extremely grateful for the coaching opportunities and experiences that I’ve had up to this point,” Lambourne, 56, told the Deseret News.
Lambourne finishes with a record of 56-8 as a head coach at Bingham, his second stint its head football coach in the Salt Lake Valley following a five-year career at nearby Hunter.
“It is easier because I am not leaving the cupboard bare,” Lambourne told the Deseret News Rewind podcast. “I just need to go have new experiences.”
Lambourne’s offensive line coach Keith Chatelain also informed the Miners earlier Monday that he plans to return to his native Louisiana to be closer to his family, according to the Deseret News.
No other staff changes were immediately known, according to one source close to the Miners.
