Beaver 45, Milford 7
SALT LAKE CITY — Beaver quarterback Ryker Albrecht rushed for two touchdowns and ran for one more to lead the Beavers to a 45-7 victory over Milford in the 2A state championship Saturday at Dixie State University.
Midway through the first quarter, Beaver trailed by a touchdown after Milford’s Bret Beebe found Bryson Barnes for a 50-yard touchdown. But after that, it was all Beaver.
The Beavers scored 45 unanswered points to runaway with the title.
Albrecht scored on a 3-yard run, found E.J. Allred on a 63-yard touchdown pass, and scored on a 20-yard run all before the first half had come to an end. Beaver’s Crayton Hollingshead and Kaleb Barney also registered rushing touchdowns in the win.
It was Beaver’s 12th state championship in program history and their third since 2015.
Morgan 8, Juab 0
SALT LAKE CITY — Who needs offensive touchdowns? Apparently not Morgan.
For the second straight game, the Trojans failed to reach pay dirt with their offense. That only resulted in their first state championship since 1997.
Morgan used a safety and two Sloan Calder field goals to outlast Juab 8-0 and win the 3A state championship Friday at Dixie State University.
“If you were to tell me the final score was going to be 8-0 and without a touchdown, I would have thought you were crazy,” Morgan head coach Kovi Christiansen told the Deseret News. “Wins aren’t always pretty but, at the end of the day, we’re just glad that we had more points than they did. It was a battle between two great defenses tonight, and I couldn’t be prouder of this team. They battled all night, gave everything they had and they deserve it.”
Defense has been key for Morgan as the Trojans have navigated through the state playoffs. In their semifinal win, they scored a safety and had a pick six (their only offensive points were a two-point conversion). And in the title game, it was more of the same.
After Morgan forced a three-and-out on Juab’s first possession of the game, the Wasps snapped the ball high and out of the back of the end zone for a safety. That was all the points Morgan needed as the defense pitched a shutout.
Morgan had seven sacks in the game and it was a rarity that Juab even crossed midfield.
