DOING THE DARNDEST THINGS — We expect a lot from our professional athletes.
But high school athletes (and younger)? They do some pretty amazing things, as well.
Here are a few of our favorite moments from prep sports in the past week, including one from the largest international baseball tournament in the world and two more from the Wasatch Front.

That's one way to draw a walk
The Little League World Series is upon us, making household names of several pre-teen baseball stars who may never get the same level of glory again.
One Venezuelan batter made sure to be remembered.
Deivis Ordonez has a way of helping his team that you might not expect — by lining up in a stance so low that it makes his strike zone nearly impossible to hit.
Just look at it.
Of course, as you can see by the video above, the pitcher from Australia wasn’t phased, delivering a perfect floater for a strike that put Ordonez behind in the count.
What’s even better, though?
Venezuela went on to win 2-0 — and the world was treated to Ordonez’s exceptional victory dance.
Nice moves.
Maybe, in this case, the kid should quit his day job.
Curtis caps Bengals’ comeback
High school football is back in Utah.
Thursday night was opening night of the 2019 season, and reigning 5A state champion Corner Canyon lived up to the hype in its opener against 4A champ Orem. The Chargers delivered a 30-14 victory, which foretold a strong 24 hours across the state.
There were even several come-from-behind victories — like Brighton's 31-28 win over Fremont.
The Silver Wolves took a 28-24 lead with 1:02 remaining. But that left just enough time for the Bengals to counter.
And Gabe Curtis' 67-yard TD strike to Matthew Cirillo with 17 seconds on the clock — Curtis’ fourth touchdown of the game — sealed the victory in Cottonwood Heights.
Here's video of the final play, which was sent to us by John Curtis, who we will assume is Gabe’s dad or a similar relative until further notice.
The kicker did it
Faced with a 9-0 deficit in the fourth quarter, Layton's football team had a comeback to mount.
First, Jake Marriott connected with Tyler Reid for a 6-yard touchdown with 4:25 remaining, and Porter Hansen’s PAT brought the Lancers within three, 10-7.
Hansen had to do just two things to be the hero: execute an onside kick in the heat of the comeback and then boot the game-winner.
Hansen’s 33-yard field goal with 10 seconds on the clock was the difference to lift Layton to a 10-9 win over Skyline.
What could be better?
Oh yeah, he’s only a sophomore.
