HERRIMAN — Friday night was supposed to be Mountain Ridge’s first home football game in Utah High School Activities Association play.

Olympus’ Scotty Edwards welcomed the Sentinels into the season in his own special way.

Edwards scored five touchdowns, and the Titans took a 49-0 lead into halftime en route to a 56-0 rout of the newest school in the Salt Lake Valley.

“We’ve been working super hard this offseason to be able to play like that tonight,” said Edwards, who also returns punts for the Titans. “We’ve got lots of work today. But we’ve got to keep it up.

“It’s our team goal: to come out as fast as possible,” Edwards said. “We’ve been waiting for this game forever — since Corner Canyon. We were excited to come out and play.”

Edwards opened the game with a 38-yard pick-six, giving Olympus (1-0) a 7-0 lead less than a minute into the game. He added a sack on the Sentinels’ next offensive drive, then scored on a 34-yard touchdown spurt with 8:36 left in the opening quarter to give the Titans a 21-0 lead.

Christian Peterson and James Sheets each added a rushing score for the Titans, and Erik Pederson hauled in a 30-yard touchdown grab from quarterback Tommy Hoggan at the end of the third quarter to salt away the shutout victory.

“Olympus is a great program; Aaron’s done a great job,” said Mountain Ridge coach Mike Meifu, who spent the past four years at West Jordan. “They lost one game all last year, in the semifinals. They’re a great program, and hat’s off to them.

“It really tested our kids.”

It doesn’t get any easier for Mountain Ridge (0-1); the Sentinels host Kearns and travel to Riverton before jumping into Region 7 play.

Fresh off a one-loss season and 5A state semifinal appearance, the Titans play Granger in next Friday’s home opener.

“I think we have all the potential in the world,” Edwards said. “Just as long as we keep working hard.”
